The Huiskamer is a social center in accordance to Dutch
law. It is a social center where social and diaconal matters
are handled. It was founded by the Dutch province
of the Society of African Mission (SMA). The Huiskamer is
often referred to as a first aid center. It is a house of
welcome, a center which provides a friendly welcome home during
the day for all Africans irrespective of their colour or
religion. |

In the Huiskamer, special concern is given to the newly arrived
and those in need of attention. There is need to advise, help
and guide the new arrivals as they may for survival purposes
get involved in some unhealthy social practices. This Huiskamer
is a meeting point for people in need of shelter, food, contact
with others and so on. A visitor is sure to find a friend,
someone from home who will make him or her feel at home. They
can also enjoy each other company and form their own system
of "networking", at times providing accommodation
and job for each other. |

One of the major misconceptions about the role of the Huiskamer
is in the area of provision of accommodation for stranded
immigrants. Most of the stranded new comers come with the
hope of securing permanent shelter, they were often disappointed
when they discover that it is not possible. Though in some
cases the chaplaincy do help some stranded new comers to secure
a few days accommodation in some youth hostels in Amsterdam.
